According to the forecast of the International Energy Association (IEA), the world annual biofuel production will reach 150 million tons of oil energy equivalent by 2030. Proponents of bioenergy argue that there is no better alternative to oil. Representatives of civil society and experts warn against certain negative consequences of obtaining and using biofuel.

On the 26th of May, the Round table “Best municipal practices of climate adaptation and role of civil society organizations” within the Forum became the platform to discuss the best practices of climate adaptation in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Helsinki, view of Ministry of Nature Use to international climate cooperation, approaches of Russian and British scientists to assess the climate change consequences and adaptation challenge, priorities of Coalition for protection of climate and clean air at UNEP, and experience of Russian Social-Ecological Union (RSEU) in supporting of local climate actions.

On May 22, RSEU Climate Secretariat held a webinar for RSEU members, NGO activists, students, teachers and all those willing to take climate action at the local level. The webinar was attended by 26 people from 9 regions of the Russian Federation (St. Petersburg and Leningrad region, Murmansk region (town of Apatity), Arkhangelsk, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District, Republic of Komi, Kaliningrad, Tyumen, Bryansk, Irkutsk) as well as Belarus.

The RF Government has adopted a Complex Plan for the enhancement of energy efficiency of the national economy. A whole list of events focused on the reduction of energy intensity of the gross domestic product until 2030 for “no less than 1.5%” annually, and also on provision of the decrease of technological backwardness of the Russian Federation from the leading countries” has been developed. How realistic is that sort of reboot? 

On April 27, the day of safe energy for climate protection was held at Ecocentrum in St. Petersburg. This day was timed to coincide with the 32nd anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that happened on April 26, 1986, and was intended to show safe energy and climate solutions, alternatives to nuclear energy and fossil fuels.

Taxation of power consumption and energy resources is one of the efficient measures for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; however, the present level of taxation does not correspond to the real costs of liquidating losses caused by climate changes, authors of the report issued by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) believe.

Up to the present time, decisions on whom to and how preferences for energy saving would be extended was decided at the federal level. Since the beginning of this year, control on the tax privileges for energy efficient objects is delegated to the regions. What should we expect from this sort of changes?  

“Prices of renewable energy are sliding down so fast that in a few years it will be more cost-efficient than produced of any of traditional fossil fuels,” experts of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) came to this conclusion in their Report on Renewable Power Generation Costs, presented at the 8^th Assembly of the organization.

“Russian companies should take the key positions in those industries and those markets which will outline the character of economy and people’s life style for the next two or three decades,” authors of the State Report ‘On the Status and Protection of the Environment in the Russian Federation in 2016’: Climate Change” believe.”.
